Yeon-jung, together with Kim Tae-ha and Shim Chae-eun, represented Starship Entertainment in the Mnet reality-survival program Produce 101, which aimed to form an eleven-member girl group that would promote for a year under YMC Entertainment. Yeon-jung placed 11th, with a total of 136,780 votes in the final episode and debuted as a member of I.O.I while the other 2 trainees were eliminated. Debut as part of IOI
As already noted, she finally made her debut with I.O.I as the last member and the main vocalist of the group, having placed 11th with a total of 136,780 votes. On May 4, the project girl-group I.O.I debuted with the mini-album Chrysalis. On May 5, the group held their first media showcase where the girls discussed their album and performed their new songs for the first time, including the title track “Dream Girls”. They also performed songs from Produce 101, such as “24 Hours” and “Yum-Yum”. The group also performed their own versions of “Pick Me”, “Crush”, and “When the Cherry Blossoms Fade”, all of which are included in their new album. On the same day, they made their official debut on M! Countdown, performing both “Knock Knock Knock” and “Dream Girls”. And here’s the video..
Re-debut as WJSN’s Youngest Member
After the disbandment of I.O.I, Yeon-jung was introduced as the thirteenth member of Cosmic Girls (WJSN). On July 11, Starship Entertainment, said, “I.O.I’s Yoo Yeonjung will be joining Cosmic Girls, the girl-group co-produced by Starship and Yuehwa Entertainment. After much deliberation, and in consideration of Yoo Yeonjung’s synergy with Cosmic Girls, we decided to restructure Cosmic Girls as a 13-member group.” The agency said that Cosmic Girls and Yoo Yeonjung were originally intended to debut in a single group, and both supported each other even when that didn’t happen. “It was a difficult decision to make as an agency, and the solid trust between Yoo Yeonjung and Cosmic Girls was a big factor in the decision. We hope you will give the group strength and encouragement.” Then, on July 12, when members, Exy, Eunseo, Soobin, and Dawon were guests in ‘Park Kyung Rim’s 2 O’Clock Date,’ The DJ wanted to know the member’s reactions about the addition of Yoo Yeon Jung to the group. The Cosmic Girls answered, “We were happy, because we’ve been cheering one another on and we’ve been close since our trainee days. Yeon Jung is such a bright ball of energy that it was great to have her join our group.” Eunseo, who now shares her room with Yeon Jung, surprised everyone when she admitted, “I’m sensitive about my room being messy, and I went head to head with Yeon Jung.” Eunseo mitigated everyone’s worries by joking, “And by going head to head I mean that we had a celebratory party. Girl-group vocalists in Korea are ready to compete in the new TVN program entitled V-1. There are 24 girl-group members who will be fighting for the title of vocal queen at the event, one of whom is Yoo Yeon-jung. The 24 contestants were selected from among 86 applicants. They will be evaluated by the judges and also online voting after uploading videos where they show rap and singing skills. Later, 12 contestants will be chosen to compete in the final round after going through the process and audiences can vote starting on July 12 through online voting. The Producer, Park Sang Hyuk, said, “Of the many members of the girl groups, many vocalists with extraordinary abilities beyond their appearance on stage. I believe that the audience will do a good job in choosing 12 contestants for the final round of the 24 contestants who were selected in the first round.
